Remember the time when we knew who we were?
When the tide coming in meant the day was a blur?
Remember the sound of the sea on the shore?
When the waves curled like savages coming for more?
Remember the silences happy and still
When the wind blew the grasses all flat on the hill?
When the plovers and seagulls were calling so shrill
and the poets were left to write what they will?
Now the word is a weapon to cut and to kill
A knife on a shaft of a fool’s rumour mill
There is slander and libel, defamation, all spill
where the autopen rules and the strobe lighting thrill
Where the autocorrect gives a halt to the flow
And the virtual twin sends the copy below
To the grinding machine where the time doesn’t go
Lost for words, ‘cos the grift is just happy to blow..
Now I’m watching my tongue and I’m watching my thoughts
and my fingers are twins to the ether’s dreadnought
and my spirit still struggles to to live as it ought
while the microchips in my head parse what they caught
For the brain of a poet must breathe and be free
not be captured and sold as a corp’s NFT
The despair of the prisoner ceases to see
any beauty or reason in this reality
Everybody got a different name
